The Details

Harvard FCU seeks to elevate and empower Harvard College students from diverse backgrounds by providing them with hands-on experience that will prepare them to excel as thoughtful, balanced community and business leaders.

Established in 1939, Harvard FCU is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative, exclusively serving the Harvard community and distinguished through our reinvestment of profits in our members and the local community, particularly in the form of free financial education.

The purpose of the Student Advisory Council (SAC) is to advise Harvard FCU in its pursuit of campus-wide financial wellness by consulting on financial education programming, university engagement events, and student banking services.

SAC consists of a small group of Harvard FCU members who are Harvard College students. SAC Representatives are expected to participate in all council meetings and contribute to personal financial wellness programming, university engagement events, and student banking services.

Projects include, but are not limited to:

Event Planning: Harvard FCU holds on-campus and virtual events to empower the community to make informed financial decisions. From informal, fire-side chats in the Houses, to large forums featuring expert guest speakers from the financial services industry, and everything in between. SAC Representatives have a large role in planning our annual Wintersession programming.

Marketing: SAC Representatives will assist with Harvard FCU’s social media presence through content creation, creative ideas, and video development. SAC members will, at times, represent Harvard FCU at campus events.

Developing Student Services: Harvard FCU takes the Student Advisory Councils’ advice into consideration when considering different offerings (such as resources, products) for students at Harvard College.

Students can work up to 5 hours a week, remotely. SAC Representatives will be expected to work at Harvard FCU’s administrative office (104 Mount Auburn Street) or at Campus events, a few times throughout the academic year.

Student Advisory Council Representatives develop valuable leadership and financial skills.

Testimonials

Jawahir Mohamed

Hi! My name is Jawahir Mohamed, a sophomore at the College, and I first joined Harvard FCU fall semester of 2022. What attracted me to Harvard FCU was its mission of ensuring financial wellness to all members within and outside of the Harvard Community.

My favorite project has been featuring on the America Saves Week Panel where I, along with other financial experts, offered up our own experiences and tips on saving money. I also enjoy writing blogs for the THRIVE webpage, Harvard FCU’s financial wellness program– one of which was featured in Harvard’s all staff member

email! It feels great to know that my work is being utilized and contributing to something meaningful.

Meadow Hall

Hello! I am a junior at the College studying Integrative Biology, and I first joined Harvard FCU’s SAC in the fall semester of 2020. I’ve loved being able to create and provide our community with financial literacy resources, like our blog posts published on THRIVE. My favorite recurring project is Wintersession, where every January term we organize panels of experts to share their knowledge on everything from taxes to investing and building credit. I am so grateful to be a part of the SAC and have the opportunity to share financial resources with other first-generation, low-income students.

David Gonzalez

Hey! I’m currently a senior at the College studying Linguistics and Philosophy. I joined Harvard FCU in the fall semester of 2021. I enjoy breaking down and communicating complex financial topics into accessible language and actionable advice. My favorite type of projects are ones that deal with social media strategy and distilling feedback data.

Carly Bolton

Hi there, my name is Carly Bolton and I’m a first-year member of SAC. When I first joined SAC, I was immediately drawn to the organization’s mission of educating others about financial markets. As someone who has always been interested in finance, I knew that SAC would be the perfect place for me to get involved and learn more.

So far, one of my favorite projects has been working on the blog for the housing forum. I loved researching and writing about a topic that impacts so many people. Through this project, I learned more about the housing market and gained valuable experience in content creation.

I look forward to continuing to work with this amazing organization and seeing what other exciting projects we will take on in the future!
