Frequently Asked Questions

Harvard Federal Credit Union is currently chartered under the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. However, after careful consideration of the options provided under both the state and federal charters, the Board of Directors believes the time has come to change to a federal charter. On March 26, members voted for us to change from a state charter to a federal charter. In short, we believe changing to a federal charter will enhance our ability to compete and thrive in today’s dynamic financial marketplace.

Harvard Federal Credit Union members have voted for us to change from a state charter to a federal charter. Therefore, we will change our name to “Harvard Federal Credit Union” which better represents who we serve.

After careful consideration of the options provided under both the state and federal charters, the Board of Directors believes the time has come to change to a federal charter. In short, we believe changing to a federal charter will enhance our ability to compete and thrive in today’s dynamic financial marketplace. It will, among other things:

  • Reduce the credit union’s annual examination fees and tax burden.
  • Provide for exclusive credit union oversight and support from the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Unlike our state regulator who regulates other entities (payday lenders, banks, mortgage brokers, etc.), NCUA regulates and insures only credit unions.
  • Enable the Credit Union to better serve our geographically dispersed membership.
  • Allow greater flexibility to introduce a variety of new services for members.
  • Modernize our field of membership and bylaws.

As a member, you will retain your valuable membership, deposits will remain fully insured through a combination of federal and state insurance, and all branch and digital services will continue to be offered. However, along with our name, we’re re-imagining the way we tell our story with a refreshed brand identity, including an all new modern logo and brighter colors. These changes will be rolling out over the coming months.

All current branding will be updated, starting with our website, social channels, advertising, and printed materials. Eventually, our signage and in-branch experiences will be refreshed, as well.

Although we are updating our name and our look and, we will never change our commitment to putting you and your financial well-being at the center of everything we do. We will continue to provide our members with smarter products and services, better rates and rewards, trusted security and superior member service.

Beyond seeing a fresh look and logo in our branches, website, and other communication, – it won’t. The new brand will not impact your account information, the processes you follow, the level of service we provide or our commitment to you.

No, all business will continue as usual. Our online banking and mobile apps will feature new branding, but the functionality and layout will remain the same.

Sure will! These cards will only be replaced once they expire. At that time, a new Harvard Federal Credit Union card will be mailed to you, just as is done currently.

Of course. You’ll be able to use Harvard FCU checks until your supply runs out. Then you may order new Harvard Federal Credit Union checks, following the same process.

Yes, all your banking information will remain unchanged.

Yes, your routing number will also remain unchanged.
